Background of the Study
Quantum computing represents a rapidly advancing field that has the potential to revolutionize industries such as healthcare, finance, and technology. As a result, many universities worldwide are incorporating quantum computing into their curricula to prepare students for the future workforce. However, in Nigeria, the integration of quantum computing courses into the computer science curriculum remains a challenge due to several factors, including limited resources, lack of trained faculty, and insufficient infrastructure (Khan et al., 2024). Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State, offers a unique case study for investigating the barriers and challenges faced by Nigerian universities in implementing quantum computing courses.
This study will explore the challenges associated with introducing quantum computing into the curriculum at Federal University, Gashua, considering factors such as faculty training, curriculum development, and the availability of quantum computing resources. By understanding these challenges, the study aims to propose strategies for successfully integrating quantum computing education into Nigerian universities.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing interest in quantum computing, Nigerian universities, including Federal University, Gashua, face significant challenges in integrating quantum computing into their curricula. The absence of qualified instructors, lack of adequate learning materials, and insufficient infrastructure for teaching quantum computing are some of the critical barriers that hinder the effective implementation of these courses. Without addressing these challenges, Nigerian universities may struggle to prepare their students for the emerging field of quantum computing, which could limit the country’s participation in the global digital economy.
Objectives of the Study
To investigate the challenges faced by Federal University, Gashua, in implementing quantum computing courses in its curriculum.
To assess the readiness of the university’s faculty and infrastructure to support quantum computing education.
To propose strategies for overcoming the challenges associated with implementing quantum computing courses in Nigerian universities.
Research Questions
What are the challenges faced by Federal University, Gashua, in implementing quantum computing courses?
How prepared are the faculty and infrastructure at Federal University, Gashua, to offer quantum computing education?
What strategies can be proposed to overcome the challenges of implementing quantum computing courses in Nigerian universities?
Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to addressing the gap in quantum computing education in Nigerian universities by identifying the challenges faced by institutions such as Federal University, Gashua. The findings will inform policy decisions and help educational authorities and university administrators understand how to overcome obstacles to quantum computing education. The research may also provide recommendations for improving the training of faculty and the development of curriculum and infrastructure to support quantum computing education in Nigeria.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State, and will be limited to investigating the challenges related to implementing quantum computing courses at the university. The research will not explore quantum computing in other educational contexts or institutions in Nigeria.
